The Forgotten Generation
The forgotten generation is not the one that went before us but the one following behind us. Everything we do as parents, as a community, and as a country affects the generation of our children. If we leave them a mess to contend with, they will have the chore of straightening our mess out. If we leave them in a position they cannot overcome, they will become slaves to the thing we left them to deal with. In the Old Testament there is a story of a group of people who forgot their children, and as a result their children were taken into captivity and passed into oblivion. The story I am speaking of is the biblical account of the ten tribes of Israelites that made up the nation of Northern Israel and the sins they committed. The things they were doing didn’t seem all that bad to them. They were honest folks working to improve their lot in life much like we in America do today. But God had a problem with that. The things they were doing was consuming all their time, so much so they didn’t have time to go to the synagogue to worship, or to pray, or to fulfill their commitment to God. So God sent a personal messenger to them by the name of Hosea to tell them what would become of them if they didn’t get their priorities straightened out. They ignored Hosea’s warning and the history of their disappearance from recorded history is found in the Book of Kings. The warning given to the Northern Israelites was as follows: [Hosea 4:6] My (God’s) people are destroyed for a lack of knowledge. (Hosea is addressing the leadership, the religious leaders, and those men and women who had families, and the responsibility of educating and training their children in the things of God.) Because you have rejected (the) knowledge (of your God and provider), I also will reject you from being priest for me; Because you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children.”
God’s warning to the people of Northern Israel stated; if they didn’t return to serve Him, they would no longer be His priest or chosen people whom He had ordained to be a shining example of His Goodness to their neighbors, and their enemies. It wasn’t as if the people didn’t know God as their provider; things were going so well at this time they simply chose to ignore Him and wrote Him out of their life. God called their rejection, “forgetting” because they were refusing to honor the word of their forefathers. Their commitment to God is found in Deuteronomy chapters 27 & 28. And Moses said to them in Deuteronomy 3:19-20. “I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live; that you may love the Lord your God, that you may obey His voice, and that you may cling to Him, for He is your life and the length of days; and that you may dwell in the land which the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give them.”
In the case of these people, it wasn’t as if they didn’t know they were subjects of God, they did, but they found other things to do in life they considered to be more important than obeying the promises of their fathers and the Law of their God. They chose to ignore God’s warning and continued looking for ways to circumvent His Law. To me this sounds very much like what America is doing today. Never in the history of mankind has God blessed a nation so tremendously as He has the United States of America. The bible says, “To whom much is given, much is required.” And like the Northern Israelites; we are not honoring the sufferings of our founding fathers who sought God’s help to bring this nation into being. We are rewriting God’s Law thinking we can somehow circumvent it and everything will continue the way they always have. We are failing to understanding just as the people of Northern Israel failed to understand that the reason their nation and our nation has been so blessed is because God’s hand was upon them from their inception and they grew to become the envy of the world; until they turned their back upon the God who made them great.
God sent a messenger to the people of Northern Israel by the name of Hosea (which means Salvation) to warn them of a pending disaster that was lingering on the distant horizon. He further warned them their children would pay the consequences for their faulty ideals if they didn‘t do an about face. To make a long story short, they refused to listen to Hosea and their children went into captivity in Assyria (modern day Iran and parts of Iraq) and have not been heard from since. Today those same people are referred to as the Lost Tribes of Israel.
We in America are fast approaching the point of no return because we are making the same mistakes the people of Northern Israel were making at that time. We have come to this point because we are turning our back upon the One who has made us great; and once again the nation of Iran is the enemy waiting at the door for an opportunity to bring about our destruction as well as that of the remaining two tribes of Israel. Because we think we are self-sufficient and don’t need Him anymore we are rejecting the knowledge He gave us that has in the past protected and blessed us. This is a fatal mistake, but one that can be easily corrected. It was not God’s idea that the children of Northern Israel be forced out of their homeland never be heard from again. He gave them a plan to escape their coming destruction, but they ignored it. All they had to do was return to Him and all would have been forgiven. If we, like the Northern Israelites do not turn once again to Him and ask Him to bless our nation, our children will pay the price of our rebellion.
It is the parents responsibility to educate and train their children in the ways of God, and if we are too busy to teach our children to obey the Law of God; we will lose them. It was just about eighty years ago that America began her turning away from God’s provision and began looking to our government as our source, and from that time on our government has assumed more and more power over the people. And now three generations have passed since the rebellious generation we call the baby boomer generation came on the scene, and with each succeeding generation our children have grown further and further away from the Lord and more and more dependent upon our government to supply their needs. And as our government accepts the substitute role of god our supplier, they are passing laws to write Him out of our country.
For many years Northern Israel had been in a state of apostasy and had stopped teaching their children about the Lord God and the miracles He performed in their behalf when He brought them out of Egypt into the land they inhabited. And approximately thirty years after Hosea warned them to turn to their God once again; their destruction came. Northern Israel suffered destruction because they would not listen to the message God sent Hosea to give them. And, we, like they, will fall by the wayside of life if we do not teach and instruct our children in the ways of God. We cannot write God out of our life. Attempting such things is foolishness and if our government officials were wise they would learn from the mistakes of the Northern Israelites. God’s will and determined purpose cannot be changed by man made laws, but we, His people, and our future can be changed by His Law if we will follow the advice of the Son of God and turn away from our wickedness before our children suffer the consequences of our selfish desires.
