Natural Disasters, or God’s Hand of Reckoning?
When the modern day New Testament Church began its journey back in the first century AD, the disciples of Jesus were curious about how God would bring the modern day church age to a close. Jesus said in the Book of Revelation, “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End,” meaning He ushered in the New Testament Church age and He will close it out by separating His people from those who are ungrateful. Jesus began His conversation with the words, “Many (imitators) will come in My Name, saying I am the Christ, and will lead many astray.” So Jesus is telling His disciples that Satan who imitates everything God does would raise up many different world religions and religious leaders who would cause the simple minded to think they are something when they are nothing. Satan who is the ‘father of lies’ thinks if he tells enough lies people will accept one of them as truth and swallow it hook, line and sinker. And so the more world religions there are for man to choose from, the easier it becomes for him to deceive the people. His plan has worked pretty well don’t you think? Satan knows men are spiritual beings and want to believe in something bigger than they are, and since he can only appeal to the flesh of man, his religions follows suit. His religions are based on the works of men, not on the grace of God. That is the difference between God’s Christianity and Satan’s world religions. God authored Christianity and states a person is saved by grace through faith in the work He did in our behalf when Jesus died on the cross. Satan’s world religions teach, man must do fleshly works to become good enough to be accepted by God.
Jesus continues in Matthew chapter 24.
Verse 6. You will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not troubled. For all these things must come to pass, BUT THE END IS NOT YET.
Verse 7. For nation will rise against nation, (man vs. man) and kingdom against kingdom. (God vs. Satan for the souls of men.)
And there will be famines, and earthquakes in various places.
People call these types of things natural disasters when in fact they are far from it. But people fail to understand three things about the kingdom of God. One, men fight wars and kill each other. Two, the destruction the earth experiences is not man made, but is the result of the supernatural conflict between God and Satan for the benefit of men. These catastrophes are not chaotic or out of control as it would appear. On the contrary, they are very well orchestrated as seen in the plagues that struck Egypt when Moses told Pharoah to let God’s people go and he refused. God used a series of events to plague Egypt, and after the first three, the remaining seven had no effect whatsoever upon God’s people. So God can and does make a distinction between peoples and nations whenever He desires. God is not concerned with the flesh of men, He is concerned about their spiritual well being, so He does what the situation calls for to get their attention. Three, everything in creation is under the control of the Lord God and nothing takes place within His creation that He does not authorize. And nothing grabs the attention of man faster than seeing his possessions destroyed and knowing he can do nothing to prevent it from happening. Man’s possessions includes the land they live on, whether it is a country or a rented trailer, our body, our finances, and our mind. When we ignore God, these things are placed in jeopardy, and when we honor Him, He teaches us how to keep them from being destroyed. (You can verify these statements in the first three chapters of the book of Job, and in John 10:10 in which Jesus gives us a birds eye view of the first three chapters of Job) Man looks at destruction as a tragedy, but God views it as an attention getter. Man is hard headed and hard hearted and won‘t change for anything, but God knows how to soften the hearts of men and get them to start thinking about changing their situation. When we honestly start seeking change, God’s name at some point is going to come up, and when we ask for His help He introduces Himself to us, and things begins to change for the better.
Even the rulers of nations have taken notice that there has never been a time in the history of mankind when as many catastrophes of such catastrophic measure have taken place as they are at the present time. They don’t know why they are increasing, but Jesus told the disciples in Matthew 24 these kinds of things will continue to increase in frequency, in number, and in magnitude, as the days pass. The amount of destruction caused by these catastrophes is already mind boggling, but Jesus has forewarned us, there will be so many events of this type occurring in the coming days that they will far exceed man’s ability to recover from them.
Verse 8. All these are the beginning of sorrows.
Verse 9. Then they (the anti-Godly) will deliver you (the true believer in Christ) up to tribulation and kill you. You will be hated (or, he who stands with God) by all nations (the unbelieving public) for my name’s sake.
Dear Friends: The battle lines have been drawn and man acting under the unction of Satan is trying to push God out of His creation; and what we are witnessing in ever increasing frequency is God starting to push back using the things Jesus listed above to gain the attention of man and to show him that he should turn from his wicked ways, repent, and be saved, while he still has time to do so.
Now let’s move on to the ever increasing magnitude of men’s troubles.
Therefore when you see the ‘abomination of desolation’ (the anti-Christ) spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place, then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains.(In other words, you better get as far away from this dude as you can because all hell is about to break loose. God will not share His glory with anyone – and the anti-Christ who is imitating God, as well as his human followers, are about to learn that lesson.) Let him who is on the housetop not go down to take anything out of his house. And let him who is in the field not go back to get his clothes. But woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days! And pray that your flight may not be in winter or on the Sabbath. For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be. And unless those days were shortened, NO FLESH WOULD BE SAVED; but for the elect’s sake those days will be shortened. Then if anyone says to you, “Look, here is the Christ! Or there! Do not believe it. For false Christs and false prophets will rise and show great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect. See, I have told you beforehand. Therefore if they say to you, Look, He is in the desert! do not go out; or Look, He is in the inner rooms! do not believe it. For as the lightning comes from the east and flashes in the west, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be. For wherever the carcass is, there the eagles will be gathered together.
Notice the last statement in this passage: For where the carcass is, there the eagles will be gathered together. What do you think that means? It means there is going to be a lot of death and destruction and ungodly men can not escape it. Jesus isn’t talking about the death of one or two ungodly people, but untold millions. God tells us, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, saith the Lord.” The wheels of justice have turned slowly in heaven thus far because God is merciful to the sinner. But in the statement, “Where the carcass is, there the eagles will be gathered together;” He is telling us the day of mercy has passed and His vengeance has caught up to and overtaken the ungrateful people who have dishonored Him, His Son, and His people, and they are now paying the full price for their rebellion.
And lastly, Jesus tells us how the New Testament Church age will close out. If you want to read the full account of this disturbing time period read the “Book of Revelation” in which Jesus Christ reveals to the Apostle John the intensity of God’s wrath upon ungrateful man during this time of men’s tribulation.
Now let’s continue: Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light: the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. And He will send His angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they will gather together His elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.
There you have it; A basic overview of the events Jesus told His disciples were going to happen during the church age. He has told us what is presently happening, what will happen during the tribulation period, and what the future of man is to be. In these last passages of scripture notice that Jesus said the sun, moon, and stars would cease giving off light. Why do you think that is? Well, let’s look at verse 30 again, Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven… and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. The great glory Jesus is talking about is the light of His glory. He is the Son of God who was glorified after He was crucified by wicked men. The first time Jesus came – almost everyone missed it, and very few people believe it today. But this time there will not be a single solitary person alive on earth who is going to miss His coming. Everyone will instantaneously become a believer because their judgment has arrived, and everyone of them will realize they have believed a lie and followed the teachings of the wrong religion. Jesus came as a nursing baby the first time to die by the hands of wicked men for the sins of the world; but this time, He is coming as the KING OF KINGS, the LORD OF LORDS, and the KING OF GLORY, and He is coming with a sharp sword in His hand to slay the wicked.
The first time Jesus came, He came as a merciful Savior to save mankind from their sin. This time He is coming as the merciless judge, jury, and executioner of all those who rejected Him because they loved being wicked. Do not be confused, dear one’s. Being wicked does not mean you have to be a murderer or worse. It simply means you chose to ignore God’s will and purpose for your life and pursue your own pleasures. The First Commandment reads; “You shall have no other gods before me.” That commandment is all encompassing and includes anything you do that keeps the Lord God from having first place in your life.
