Behave Like a Christian

I was reading chapter twelve of Romans this morning and it struck me after reading verses 9-21 of this chapter how wise we would all be if we followed the simple outline Paul laid out for us in these verses. (9) Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil. Cling to what is good. Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another, not lagging in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord; rejoicing in hope, patient in tribulation, continuing steadfastly in prayer; distributing to the needs of the saints, given to hospitality. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep. Be of the same mind toward one another. Do not set your mind on high things, but associate with the humble. Do not be wise in your own opinion. Repay no one evil for evil. Have regard for good things in the sight of all men. If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceable with all men. Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord. “Therefore “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; If he is thirsty, give him a drink; For in so doing you will heap coals of fire on his head.” (21) Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.”

There is not a more clear picture in the bible of the God we serve than the one Paul has painted for us in these dozen verses of Scripture in Romans. If you have ever been unsure about how God thinks, how He acts, and what He believes; here is a word picture painted by the Holy Spirit and the hand of the Apostle Paul of the Lord Jesus Christ. As we follow Him through the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, we will see every one of these Christian characteristics put into practice for our understanding. And written into this picture of the Lord Jesus Christ; Paul admonishes us as he did the church in Rome to release these simple but very powerful qualities in our own life. And if we will do as instructed and behave like a Christian is supposed to, we will indeed have a wonderful reputation in our communities as caring, loving people who understand our reason for being is to help those who do not yet understand what true life is all about. If we will release the powerful Holy Spirit to work through us as the first century church did; He will not only make us to become like Christ, we will turn our world upside down for Jesus in our generation just like the first century church did in their time.
