What is Man?
Many people have trouble understanding who they are and what their purpose is for being. Are you one of them? If so, you are more than you ever dreamed and less than you will be. Of course being more than you ever dreamed and less than you will be, are conditional. They are conditional on what you understand about life, and how you go about living that life. The reason people never discover who they are is they don’t search for the truth with their whole heart, therefore they wander through life always wishing things could be different. The writer of the Book of Hebrews in the New Testament of the bible tells us in chapter two beginning in verse six, “What is man that you are mindful of him; or the son of man that you take care of him? You have made him a little lower than the angels; you have crowned him with glory and honor, and set him over the works of your hands. You have put all things under his feet.” Here we have a question, “What is man that you are mindful of him, or the son of man that you take care of him?” And he proceeds to give us the answer, “You have made him a little lower than the angels;” the word ‘angels’ is actually a misinterpretation and should be the word ‘God’. In the Book of Genesis, God said, “Let us make man in our image.” So we are made in the image of God, not angels, therefore we are not lower than angels who were created. We were birthed by the Father Himself when He breathed His Spirit into the nostrils of Adam. Now let us continue, “You have crowned him with glory and honor, and set him over the works of your hand. You have put all things under his feet.” You may look at yourself and say, “I don’t feel like I have been crowned with glory and honor.” But whether you feel like it or not, you are; and if you expect to gain control of your life you will have to start seeing yourself the way God see’s you. When He birthed us, he didn’t make a mistake; He made us an individual with all the power and glory he gave to any other person. Next the writer says, “You set him over the works of your hands.” Notice this doesn’t just say, your home, your yard, or your business. It says, “Over the works of your (God’s) hands.” Well, what did God do with His hands? He created creation and all that is within it. Are you telling me that God set me over the works of His hands?” Yes, I am. That’s what the bible teaches. The writer carries that thought one step further and tells us, “You have put all things under his feet.” How many things in God’s creation did the writer say God put under the feet of man? The bible says, “All things.” In other words, God left nothing out. Now are you beginning to get the idea that you are a highly prized creature in God’s eyes? We weren’t created to be nothings, we were created to be somebody. We are sons of the Most High God. Rulers with Him over all of creation. The writer of Hebrews said, “We were created just a little lower than God Himself.” Can you believe that? Aren’t our children made in our image and rank just a little lower than ourselves in our household? And I can tell you, “Our children value themselves on the same scale we value ourselves.” If we have low self-esteem our children will have low self-esteem. If we think highly of ourselves so will our children. What we do they imitate, and in most cases they will grow up to become a replica of us. Are you beginning to get the idea? God’s children imitate their Father, and the children of the devil imitate him. And when the time comes, we will go to our eternal resting place to live with one of them forever. One place will be peaceful, the other hell.
The Apostle Paul further expanded on this subject when he wrote in [Romans 8:38-39], “For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Notice the five little words near the end of this statement, “Nor any other created thing.” What Paul listed in this statement are all ‘created things’ and all of them are under the feet of the person who loves Christ Jesus. It also might help us to understand that the only things in creation that are not created beings is the God-head – God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit and the children of God. Everything else was created and are under the feet (or authority) of the children of God. Wow! How can the Christian have low self-esteem when they are the apple of God’s Eye? God has given us the power to choose life and to reign in life, He has given us the power to choose death and the power over death, He has given us the power to rule in life, and He has given us the power to submit to a lesser being than ourselves. God has given us the power of choice, and we will live with the choices we make not only in this life time, but in the life to come.
Do you remember what Jesus said to Pilate just a short time before He was crucified? Pilate said to Jesus, “Do you not know that I have power to crucify you or to let you go?” Jesus stood before him a bloody mess, a man beaten beyond recognition; yet He responded to the question of Pilate the authority figure representing the mighty Roman empire in Israel, “You have no power at all over me. The only power you have is what has been given to you from above.” (My paraphrase) You need to understand Jesus is speaking to the Roman representative man to man, and even though Jesus was the fleshly body of God, or God Incarnate, He was speaking to Pilate, not as God, but man, “You and your mighty army with all of it mighty weapons of war have no power over me.” Why is that important for us to understand this? Rome was a created city situated on seven created hills on a planet that was created for God’s children. Jesus the man was telling the power of Rome; the thing created has no power over the creator and those whom God calls His equals, His children. We are a lot more than a broken down piece of flesh, full of aches and pains walking the streets of life wondering how it is all going to end. God keeps no secrets from His children. And those who don’t know who they are – don’t know what their purpose in life is because they are too busy chasing after temporary pleasures to search for the truth of what they were born to be and do.
