Trusting in Lying Words That Cannot Profit
It’s easier for a person to believe a lie than it is for them to accept the truth. The prophet Jeremiah wrote about this very subject in the Old Testament book named after himself. Jeremiah was a prophet of God who loved God and his fellow Israelite’s with an unwavering love, but he never won a single convert to the Lord during his tenure as God’s prophet to Israel. He wasn’t as popular with the Israelite’s as the false prophets were because he preached only what God told him to preach. And God’s people wasn’t interested in what God had to say to them. They had drifted so far away from God in their hearts all they wanted to hear was messages that made them feel good. Messages that allowed them to do whatever evil thing they desired to do. God was not pleased with them and had this to say to them in Jeremiah 7:8 “You trust in lying words that cannot profit.” In other words, God was telling them the lies they were believing was going to be their downfall. God said to Jeremiah, “Do they provoke me to anger? says the Lord. Do they not provoke themselves, to the shame of their faces? Therefore thus says the Lord God “Behold, My anger and My fury will be poured out on this place – on man and on beast, on the trees of the field and on the fruit of the ground. And it will burn and not be quenched.” Jeremiah 8:19-20
Do you understand that we have this same situation in churches all across America today? The church calls God, Father, but fornicates with the gods of money, power, lies and deceit; and thinks God is going to reward them for their evil lifestyle by taking them to heaven with Him to live forever in the sweet bye and bye. Ain’t gonna happen. He had this to say to the Israelite’s in Jeremiah 8:11-12 “Has this house, which is called by my name, become a den of thieves in your eyes? Behold, I, even I, have seen it, says the Lord. But go now to My place which was in Shiloh, where I set My name at first, and see what I did to it because of the wickedness of My people Israel.” I want you to notice who God is talking to in this passage of scripture. He is talking to the Israelite’s. The very same people who attended His house of worship. Oh, my! You are thinking, “I thought God was love.” He is love, but He also expects us to be obedient children and love Him as much as He loves us. People who do their own thing are self serving rebels and God punishes selfish people; He doesn’t reward them.
And in case you didn’t realize this; the bible was written to teach believers how to live their life so we won’t make the same mistakes the Israelite’s of olden times made. Jesus said in John 8:32, “And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” As you read in the above scripture; it isn’t the feel good messages people hear that sets them free of the power of evil. The truth found only in God’s Word sets people free and breaks Satan’s hold on our life. Listening to feel good messages got the Israelite’s in a lot of trouble and it will do the same to modern day believers. Those warm fuzzy feelings we get from listening to feel good messages may make us feel good about ourselves and tell us we can live life the way we want because we are not responsible to anyone for what we do; is a lie. If we expect to spend eternity with our Savior in heaven; we will do so because we swallowed God’s truth and allowed His truth to free us from the lies we are told. The faithful church listens, meditates upon, and acts upon the Word of God that sets them free. They know the truth when they hear it and they know a lie when it is told. God’s faithful church will not be filled with liars, thieves and murderers. Quite the contrary; if you read the New Testament; you will find on more than one occasion Jesus threw the self-seeking money chasing people out of the temple who had turned His Father’s house into a den of thieves. He cleaned it then, and He is cleaning it now. Read God’s Word and be set free. DThrash
