The Gates of Hell Shall Not Prevail

Jesus made a remarkable statement in Matthew 16:18, “And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” This scripture has been a stumbling block to many people in that they think the Lord is talking about the Apostle Peter as being the rock upon which the church is built, but that isn’t what the Lord said in this scripture and those preceding it. The conversation between the Lord and Peter begins with the question, “Who do you say that I am?” And Peter responds, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” The jest of this whole conversation is of this particular revelation to Peter from the Father that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God. Jesus continues, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. “And I say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” The rock in this statement is referring to the revelation to Peter that Jesus is the Christ. And whatever weakness Simon Bar-Jonah had before this time would be put away and Peter would become rock steady just as all of are to be rock steady who are in Christ Jesus. Jesus continues in the next scripture with “And I give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”

Jesus Christ is the Rock of our Salvation. Christ was the Rock in the wilderness of Exodus from which the water poured forth for the thirsty Israelite’s. He is the Bread of Life. He is the Rock of Ages. Peter is none of those things. Jesus Christ who is in heaven is the head of the church, not Peter, and the church is the body of Christ on the earth and it is this truth that the gates of hell cannot prevail against. If Satan could not prevail against Jesus and keep His body in the grave, he cannot prevail against His earthly body either. When Jesus arose victorious over death, hell and the grave, He turned the keys to the kingdom of heaven over to His church body and gave us the power to bind and loosen those spirits who oppose us in both heaven and on the earth according to the above scriptures. If Jesus gave us the keys to victory, I wonder how come the church does not use these keys in our fight against Satanic forces who oppose us? DThrash
