Because of You
“The name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you”, Paul wrote to the Jews in Romans 2:24. Paul was rather upset at the Jews because they were supposed to be the light of the world, but they were anything but the light.
Paul began this conversation with, “You are called a Jew, and rest on the law, and make your boast in God, and know His will, and approve the things that are excellent, being instructed out of the law, and are confident that you yourself are a guide to the blind, a light to those who are in darkness, an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of babes, having the form of knowledge and truth in the law.
You, therefore, who teach another, do you teach yourself?
You who preach that a man should not steal, do you steal?
You who say, “Do not commit adultery,” do you commit adultery?
You who abhor idols, do you rob temples?
You who make your boast in the law, do you dishonor God through breaking the law?
For the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you.”
And in Romans 2:28 “For he is not a Jew who is one outwardly, nor is circumcision that which is outward in the flesh; but he is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the Spirit, not in the letter; whose praise is not from men but from God.”
What a stinging indictment Paul wrote about the Jews in Rome. However, if we were to substitute the word ‘church’ for ‘Jews’ and ‘God’s Word’ for the word ‘law’, would Paul write such an indictment about today’s church? Are the churches really doing what the Word of God instructs us to do? Or, does the church, like the Jews Paul is rebuking in this letter, blaspheme the name of God among the unbelievers by the way we live life and conduct God’s business? If we are really that unsure about whether or not the church is hypocritical; we should ask the sinners. Jesus said to God’s people in Matthew 6:23 concerning hypocrisy, “If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness!” I think it is safe to say that’s why the unbelievers are not beating down the doors of our churches to get inside to have their needs met. But that can be changed if the church will seek God with all of their heart. God not only can, but will change His church so that it becomes the miracles worker He intended for it to be when Jesus instituted it on the Mount of Olives just before His ascencion. DThrash
